Overhead Athletes

Overhead Athletes

Certified Overhead Athlete clinicians have in-depth understanding of this specialized population.

Excel Physical Therapy’s Overhead Athlete Program features certified Overhead Athlete clinicians with rigorous next-level training and experience. We specialize in the post-surgical and nonsurgical management of injuries common to the throwing athlete.

INJURIES AND TREATMENT UNIQUE TO THE OVERHEAD ATHLETE

Athletes who participate in overhead sports – such as baseball, volleyball, tennis and more – face the risk of developing several common upper extremity injuries. Whether due to trauma or overuse, the throwing motion puts a great amount of stress onto the shoulder and elbow joints.

The treatment of this population requires an in-depth understanding of throwing-related anatomy, throwing mechanics, and return to sport principles. Our certified clinicians have extensive evidence-based knowledge and an advanced skill set to provide superior care to this specialized population.

COMMON INJURIES AND CONDITIONS

Injuries common to the overhead athlete can include shoulder labrum tears and surgical repair, ulnar collateral ligament injury, Tommy John surgery, rotator cuff tears and surgical reconstruction, scapular dyskinesis, GIRD, and more. Our clinicians are proficient in the diagnosis and treatment of all upper extremity injuries, including those specific to throwing athletes.

SPECIALIZED TRAINING BREEDS BETTER RESULTS

Our Certified Overhead Athlete clinicians most complete additional education and training, including attaining the credential of HSS Rehabilitation Baseball Overhead Athlete Certification. All EXCEL therapists with this achievement have a keen interest in treating this specific population. In addition, we work with the area’s best physicians, surgeons, and rehabilitation experts to set up in-house seminars where our therapists can learn about new procedures, cutting edge techniques, and emerging rehab protocols and best practices.

Our Overhead Athlete Program also acts as an in-house think tank where clinicians can collaborate on particularly difficult or complex cases, ensuring that every patient receives the benefit of the best, most advanced knowledge that EXCEL has to offer.
