It seems like New York sports fans can’t seem to cut a break. The Giants lose another team captain, linebacker Blake Martinez, for the season, and Jets receiver, Elijah Moore, looks like he may miss Sunday’s upcoming game against Tennessee.

We’re here to breakdown the injuries to these hometown sports stars and give the prognosis for their eventual return.

Blake Martinez – ILB, NY Giants – ACL Tear

Inside linebacker for the Giants, Blake Martinez, suffered a non-contact ACL injury in Week 3 against the Atlanta Falcons. A non-contact injury to the anterior cruciate ligament occurs when there is no external force applied directly to the knee. While there were no reported injuries to additional structures, Martinez should be counted out for the current year.

There have been NFL players who have returned in a seemingly sprint-like fashion from ACL injury (ex. Wes Welker). However, there have been several professional athletes as of late that have taken well over a year to return to full form. There has been recent research to support the longer rehabilitation timeline to reduce the risk of re-injury upon returning to full competition. The bigger question may be if Martinez is able to return at the start of the 2022 season.

Elijah Moore – WR, NY Jets – Concussion

The second round draft pick for the Jets reportedly sustained a concussion in last week’s contest. A concussion is a temporary brain injury caused by brain movement, and barring any setbacks, usually resolve within days or weeks. Rehabilitation for a concussion includes active rest and an increased exertion protocol. It would not be unheard of to return a week after sustaining a concussion, but Moore is far from a sure thing to be playing on Sunday against the Titans. The NFL has its own return to play protocol that Moore will need to complete with the Jets sports medicine team.

Both these athletes are impactful players on their team and will be definitely be missed for any time they are out. We wish them both a full, speedy recovery and keep our fingers crossed for a healthy Week 4!
