On January 27, we kicked off the New Year with Dr. David Porter from Cahill Orthopedics in Hackensack. Dr. Porter has taken part in a number of research efforts that include a variety of peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters on shoulder, knee, and elbow conditions. In this presentation, Dr. Porter discussed the signs and symptoms of shoulder arthritis and the treatment options for this condition. Then, EXCEL Oakland Clinic Director, Jeff Ziegler, PT, MSPT provided a home exercise program for individuals managing their shoulder arthritis at home.

Dr. David Porter is a board-eligible orthopedic surgeon with fellowship training in sports medicine. He specializes in the treatment of sports-related injuries in both athletes and non-athletes. Dr. Porter earned his undergraduate degree at Boston College, and his medical degree from Rutgers Medical School. He then completed his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York City and a Sports Medicine fellowship at UHZ Sports Medicine Institute in Miami, FL. His clinical interests include sports related injuries and total joint replacement. In addition to working with professional-level and collegiate sports teams, Dr. Porter has also participated in several research studies. His research efforts include a variety of articles and book chapters on shoulder, knee, and elbow conditions. His articles have been published in peer-reviewed journals like American Journal of Sports Medicine, CORR, HSS Journal, Journal of Arthroplasty, and Arthroscopy Techniques, with topics including arthroscopic procedures, clavicle fracture repair, and the use of platelet-rich plasma at the donor site post-ACL reconstruction. He is a member of AAOS and AOSSM.
Jeffrey Ziegler, PT, DPT graduated from College Misericordia , now Misericordia University, in 2006 with a B.S. in Health Science and an M.S. in Physical Therapy. During his final year of school, Jeff became a graduate assistant at EXCEL. He accepted a physical therapist position prior to graduation at the newly opened Oakland office (at the time just the third overall location), where he is now the Clinic Director. Growing up, Jeff competed in numerous sports, swimming being the top choice for him. He went on to swim in college for four years and was team captain for two years. He was also a one-time MVP. In addition to swimming, he also played lacrosse for two years. Since graduating, he hasn’t left the pool. Jeff enjoys coaching various levels of swimming, ranging from youth to adults, training primarily triathletes. Jeff’s love for athletics and anything exercise-related made physical therapy a perfect fit as a career. Jeff strongly believes in exercise, the importance of being active on an everyday basis, and how valuable it is to maintain a positive attitude.
