Joe Walsh, PT, DPT
NJ PT License # 40QA01515000
Growing up in Mahwah, Joe spent the majority of his childhood outdoors with his friends, playing sports, inventing fun new games and exploring the area. While growing up,Joe played most sports, in one form or another. As an active boy, his physical activities lead to frequent injuries. While playing a friendly game of football during his senior year of high school, Joe suffered his first major injury. He tore his ACL in his knee, requiring surgery and seven months of rehab. Joe performed his rehab at EXCEL in Oakland and immediately became enamored with the profession. He was drawn to the combination of understanding the complexities of the human anatomy and the body’s healing process. Joe also understood how important his therapist’s role was in helping him overcome the emotional aspect of undergoing a major surgery.
Joe went on to college at Marist in Poughkeepsie, NY, pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Biomedical Science with a minor in Psychology. During his summers home, he worked as an aide at EXCEL to further understand the intricacies of working in an outpatient physical therapy environment. Joe had another knee surgery, this time less serious, but again attended PT at EXCEL in Oakland for six weeks. He had a much greater understanding of the rehab process the second time around, so it further pushed him towards the profession. After graduation, Joe continued his education at Widener University, receiving a doctorate degree in physical therapy while obtaining a certification in special education.
Joe enjoys working with all different types of injuries and patients of all age ranges, but admits that he will always have a soft spot for a teenager who attends PT after a knee surgery. Despite the knee injuries, Joe continues to be very active, playing men’s league ice hockey and softball every week. He also enjoys playing golf, although admits that he is not very good. Joe enjoys watching most sports, with his loyalties going to the NY Rangers, NY Yankees, NY Giants, NY Knicks, and the Notre Dame football team. Joe loves to travel the country, but would like to begin to expand his travels to Europe in the near future.
